Water heaters need replacing after a couple of years. With that said yours may already be in for replacement. You may have heard of tankless water heating which never runs out of hot water. This may sound interesting for you if you have ever experienced running out of hot water in the middle of needing it. Are you ready to go tankless? Here are some pros and cons to help you decide.
Pros Of Going For The Tankless Model
Because they are tankless, they do not limit hot water to a fixed amount, therefore you can be sure not to run out of hot water with tankless water heaters. Not having a physical tank also makes them space saving and free from the danger of flooding caused by ruptured tanks.
In terms of lifespan, tankless water heaters last longer, about 5 to 10 more years compared with the tanked type. In terms of environmental impact, you can expect zero greenhouse gases from the electric type of tankless water heater. Most tankless units now are provided with rebates in federal tax and most of the installations allow as much as 20 percent savings from your bill in water heating.
Cons Of Going For The Tankless Model
While this model may not have you run out of hot water, it may require you to run water to reach the heated water because of the lag time in heating. If you are not careful, this may mean water wastage.
The electric type may not emit greenhouse gases when operated but the gas-powered units do. The electric type may not be seen without flaw since it would require additional circuitry and would definitely require a lot of energy.
You may be able to save with tankless water heaters but you have to know that they are generally more expensive, about 3 times more expensive than a tank water heater. Depending on the model, additional cost may be expected of tankless water heater installations.
Gas types sometimes need large natural gas line and stainless steel tubing to support gas and propane units. The larger gas line and stainless steel tubing pose additional expense that you thought with switching to a tankless water heater.
Normally 20 percent of your home budget may go to water heating. At the end of the day, the decision boils down to how much you need a continuous supply of heated water and how much you are willing to spend for it.
